Soil

We screen our own soil here on our property with a 3/8" screen so that there's no rocks, which makes it very easy to rake out onto a lawn or landscape beds. You can come pickup as little as half a yard or as many yards as you need, as well as having it delivered to your site. Our truck holds ten yards and we can make as many trips as you want or we can hire tri-axles (giant dump trucks) to bring you huge amounts of soil in fewer trips.

In addition to selling top soil by itself, we also do something very unusual. We mix grass seed with the top soil for pickup or delivery so that all you have to do is spread it over the top of the bare spots in your yard and it will germinate in less than half the time with very little effort on your part. You really don't even need to use hay if you do it this way. One spring, we sold it to a customer who said he had a started lawn growing within one week of spreading the seed/soil mix. It usually takes about six weeks for germination the normal way in spring. We can also customize the seed we use according to your light levels: sun/sun and shade/shade.

We normally mix about 10lbs/yd if you are spreading it on thin and a little more than 5lbs/yd if the soil is going to be put on thicker.

We also make a product unique to our nursery that is a result of decades of working with plants and soil. We recognize that organic matter in soil is eaten by bacteria and disappears over time due to microbial action. Some plants don't care, but some plants do. The kids of plants that need a looser soil are perennials and vegetable plants. These types of plants have what I would consider to be weak root systems that need to be pampered with loose, fluffy soil to make their job easier. There are also relationships between soil microbes and plant roots that we don't quite fully understand, but what we do know is that these relationships must exist for some (most?) plants to thrive.

So what we do to accomplish this for you, is to mix our high quality topsoil with undyed dust and mulch particles which are the result of us grinding our mulch. The reason we do that is that we are providing food for the microbes to eat over several years. The dusty portion of this addition in the first one or two years and the larger particles that you will see in our garden soil provide a food source for these microbes for an additional several years to come.

When we scoop out garden soil from our covered pile, a cloud of steamy, tropical air smelling like Hawaii comes out, a byproduct of the microbial action in our soil. Proving that the garden soil we sell is as alive as a bowl of yogurt. The fluffy, loose nature of this soil has a pH of 7.0, perfect for vegetables and perennials.

All of the above focuses solely on the physical and biological nature of this soil product and does not deal with fertility at all, something that is addressed in our "Veggie Blog." If you aren't familiar with gardening, visit our "Veggie Blog," and scroll down to the bottom and start at the beginning (April, 2017).  In the beginning section we discuss fertilizing vegetable gardens and touch on it throughout the blog post.
