FALL HORTICULTURE

why planting in fall and even early winter is better than spring:

12/5/2020

Planting trees, shrubs, and perennials now is better than planting in the spring and summer, The reason for that is that you can plant them in the ground and never water them. The roots of plants grow a lot in the winter. We humans look at plants now and think that they are dormant, but they are not.
Some trees grow about a foot of roots per side between October and April, giving them a lot of protection from the insane heat and droughts that afflict us increasingly every year.
Plants don't die in the winter, they are weakened by summer stresses, and when plants don't come back in the spring, people assume that winter killed them when it was in fact the summer stresses.

Winter hours-

call or text 203-261-3926 to see if we are there. We can meet you there for firewood pick ups in most cases. We are there m-f partial hours and occasional weekend days. We still have tons of shrubs, trees, and perennials for sale stored in overwintering structures.

Note- Inclement weather changes our hours. If in doubt, call us. Inclement weather includes extreme heat and cold, extreme snow and rain.

Winter- call and leave a message. We go in every now and then, we will call you back.
